Arley, AL

Welcome to Middle-of-Somewhere Alabama!

I’ll be honest, I was ready to throw in the towel about an hour away from our destination. The first thing we realized is that if our GPS indicates it’s going to be a 5 hour trip, it will most definitely take 7. The second thing we learned, is that if we wait just one more exit, or rest area, or gas station…there will not be another one for at least 150 miles, ha!

We drove through some very remote parts of Mississippi and Alabama, and ended up at Hidden Cove RV Resort, which is part of the Thousand Trails system. A minor reason that we picked this destination was that it sits about halfway between Vicksburg, Mississippi and Atlanta, Georgia, our next destination.

USS Alabama

On the way to New Orleans we decided to swing by and tour the battleship, USS Alabama.

It’s roughly an hour from Gulf Shores, just outside Mobile, AL. This experience was phenomenal! There are several planes, helicopters, tanks, etc. on the grounds and you may self tour the battleship and a submarine, the USS Drum. There is also an Aircraft Pavilion that houses all sorts of planes. Mr. S’s favorite, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird stealth bomber, was there.

The battleship was enormous!

Lots of narrow and steep ladders and passageways. I think during WWII they must have had a size requirement for people…no wider than 20″. It was so much fun exploring all the nooks and crannies throughout; there were some partitioned off vignettes but they made up for that with lots of areas you could touch and climb on. Divagirl tried out every bunk, I think.

Gulf Shores, AL

We love it when our friends stalk us because they hook us up with places to stay along the way. Two families we met at the rally, the Travaglino’s and the Burrell’s, were already in Alabama when they found out we were headed their way, so we changed course from Mobile to Gulf Shores. The park is called Luxury RV Resort, which is a pretty misleading name for essentially a spacious parking lot. The location cannot be beat, though. Very close to all sorts of restaurants and shops and walking distance to the beach. So as far as proximity goes, its a 10. For ambiance, its about a 3. There are 2 rather large alligators and a wild boar that frequent the property, but we have yet to see them.

It was fantastic hanging out and catching up with our friends, and even though Divagirl’s friend, Emma, was sick when we arrived, her other friend, Tonia, was healthy and ready to play!

We Finally Made It Out Of Florida!

Just when we thought it would never happen…we made it!

With all the fickle weather, and car troubles setting our schedule back we were starting to wonder if Florida had a hold on us.

White sand beaches, high rise condos and hotels, this is not what I expected Alabama to look like. I guess I was expecting more along the lines of the movie Deliverance. We are down at the southernmost “foot” of Alabama–they just had to have their access to the Gulf of Mexico too. It’s VERY warm and humid here in the 80’s range.

At least Mr. S will get to put the second state sticker on our map.

Hello Alabama!
