Twelve Years More or Less

Some friends of ours moved in down the lane from us which enables Divagirl to have a friend nearby to play with. It also makes for a good motivational tool to get her to finish her schoolwork in a timely manner. Her and the other kiddos played spinning games outside and then devoured some watermelon.

This evening we let Mr. S celebrate his birthday a little early with his friend, Matt, since Matt’s family will be moving on tomorrow morning. Of course that also meant an extra free day from school work (which will be made up tomorrow) so they could be free-range together all day. We ordered pizza from a local pizzeria and I made an ice-cream cake to Mr. S’s exact orders (vanilla ice cream, chocolate cookie crumbles and chopped peanut butter cup topping).

Vernal Equinox

Today we celebrated the coming of spring by coloring eggs. I hard boiled 16 and hollowed out 10. Last year I didn’t make nearly enough, so this year I made plenty! I also broke down and bought real food coloring. Those who know me, know I usually use natural food dyes made from boiling the skins of onions or blueberries or what have you. Not this year. I totally wimped out. But they were very vibrant!

At the end of the day a friend reminded me that on the Vernal Equinox you can stand an egg on end. The first time I tried it I failed. Then I tried again and it stayed for about 30 seconds! It was so cool! Too bad I didn’t get a photo. As soon as I tried to get the kids to come take a look, the movement of the coach caused it to fall.

Welcome Spring!

St. Patty’s Day Baking

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I decided to do some baking today. Not your ordinary baking though. Thanks to Pinterest, I’ve seen so many fabulous recipes I’ve been longing to try but I haven’t had the proper ingredients because these are Paleo/Gluten-Free recipes. Before I left my parents’ I used their coffee grinder to grind some almonds into flour. We also stopped by Trader Joe’s to pick up some key ingredients.

First I made a healthy version of a Shamrock Shake from Primally Inspired. Even the kids liked it :)

Then the real baking began. Divagirl was my helper and we started with a Black Bean Chocolate Cake from A Tasty Love Story’s blog. I don’t have an electric food processor with us, just a hand cranked one so the beans weren’t very finely mashed. It still tasted yummy, very chocolatey. I froze one loaf for later.

USA Map

We loved seeing maps of where people have gone in their RV but the classic solid color USA map is no longer available. Its been replaced by one where the state stickers are represented by license plates. That one just didn’t fit with our decor ;)

I stumbled across a former travel blog who now has a permanant home and sign business. Its called signsoflife.net and they make a beautiful vinyl map with vibrant solid state colors.

Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake

This is a quick post to spread the word for a friend – he’s developing a new environmental puzzle game for desktop and mobile devices, and he’s currently running a Kickstarter project to raise funds for the final leg of the journey.

I’m personally a backer of the project, and my kids are excited to see it come to fruition, so this is me doing my bit to help spread the word to any game fans — both kids and adults alike!

With 22 days to go, the project is already 90% funded.

Check it out, and if it’s your thing, or something you think your kids would enjoy, consider backing the project as you see fit.

Thanks in advance!
